"Madam President, many solutions are needed that will contribute to a reduction in poverty. We should strive to ensure that public services such as education, communication and health services are available equally to all citizens of the European Union.
I want to draw attention to two problems which concern me very much. The first problem is the decision to reduce, and consequently eliminate, the food aid to those most in need. In Poland, around 4 million individuals benefit from this programme. There are 20 000 volunteers and 7 000 organisations working for this programme and for the people who need it. Today, we have heard many beautiful words and declarations while, at the same time, the European Commission and the Council have decided to liquidate the programme.
I would also like to draw attention to the problem of discarded food. In the European Union today, we discard millions of tonnes of food, and billions of euro are thrown away as waste food sent for recycling waste. I would like to add my voice in support of programmes which aim to educate the citizens of the European Union in order to reduce the amount of food which is thrown away or recycled."@en1
