"Madam President, the EU is one of the richest and most highly developed regions in the world. Despite this, it remains a sad fact that there are 116 million people living in poverty in the EU, and 80 million at risk of poverty, of whom 20 million are children. The growth in poverty in recent years is not just the result of the economic or financial crisis, but arises, above all, from inadequately implemented and feeble policies for reducing and eliminating poverty. In this regard, the Europe 2020 strategy only sets the target of reducing the number of people at risk of poverty by 20 million, but there are no penalties for failing to achieve this result. I would like to say again that, according to the founding treaties, it is part of the EU’s mission to support social justice and combat social exclusion. I would like to end by saying that we must give attention to all citizens – but especially the most vulnerable, such as the elderly and disabled people."@en1
