"Madam President, I should like to begin by thanking our rapporteur, Mr Daerden, and Commissioner Andor for this initiative which introduces a European platform against poverty and social exclusion. In the current crisis, our political actions must be more transparent and there must be greater mobilisation, as we cannot leave it up to associations and NGOs to tackle this problem by themselves. We must mobilise our forces and there is no doubt that we shall have to be more effective. That is what we expect. The first point that I would like to make today – and I am very pleased to be able to do so – is that the food aid programme for the most deprived persons puts us in a good position for the 2012 and 2013 campaigns. Rest assured, Commissioner, we shall be fully mobilised over the stability of this programme. The second point that I would like to press is that we must do all we can to combat the problem of young people leaving education with no qualifications. If we allow them to leave education with no qualifications, we will certainly stop them from integrating into society and allow them to sink into poverty. In my view, social integration is both a matter of integrating people into the labour market and of training. Finally, I would like to point out that the European Social Fund is crucial in this respect. As rapporteur for this very European Social Fund, I shall do my utmost to help it play its role in combating poverty. Our European strategy for eradicating poverty must mobilise national action plans and solidarity, one of Europe’s fundamental values."@en1
