"Mr President, I would like to draw everyone’s attention to the fact that the Israeli Government and Parliament, the Knesset, are now in the process of adopting some of the laws that we have criticised on numerous occasions, not only here in Parliament, but also in the Commission and the Council, namely, those laws which lay waste to democracy and the freedom of expression. They want to set a very stringent ceiling on public aid, that is to say, government aid, for example, for B’Tselem and other human rights organisations. They will be allowed to receive a maximum of ILS 20 000, the equivalent of just a few thousand euro, a year. That is tantamount to stopping them completely. I am very grateful for the fact that the Commission has protested. Our ambassador in Tel Aviv spoke out very clearly against this last Thursday, but still nothing is happening. Israel is merely continuing because it is not encountering any real opposition. I would therefore very strongly urge the Council and the Commission to consider whether we should not now start to look at the privileged partnerships between Israel and the EU. It cannot be right for us to accept the destruction of the freedom of expression in this way in Israel – and certainly not from those who have been our best partners for a long time. We need to do more than simply get angry and say ‘Shame on you!’ and ‘You must not do that!’ This is a disaster, and not only for the freedom of expression and democracy, but, in reality, for Israel’s future as well."@en1
