"Mr President, recent events in Syria show that this country does not have a chance of achieving a non-violent revolution and that all expressions of disobedience against the regime will be suppressed by the authorities. Citizens fighting for their fundamental human rights and journalists are being illegally arrested without good reason or are being held in prison. One such prisoner, lawlessly detained on the basis of arbitrary arrest and being held without a fair trial, is Rafah Nached, who was arrested last month in Damascus. The question of her detention must be resolved immediately, especially in view of her continually deteriorating health. Today we must raise our voice in appeal to the Syrian authorities to discontinue their practice of arbitrary arrests and detentions of political figures, human rights activists and journalists, and to release all prisoners of conscience. The authorities must also provide a public account of all cases of people killed, wounded or missing in their country."@en1
