"Further to questions for oral answer pursuant to Rule 115(5) of the Rules of Procedure, a motion for a resolution of the European Parliament was tabled on the issue of the public health threat of antimicrobial resistance. Most of the EU public are not aware of the harmful impact that the indiscriminate use of antibiotics could have on public health, for both humans and animals. Several scientific studies warn of the risk to public health of certain bacterial strains found in food and food-producing animals. The EU institutions have drawn the attention of all those in positions of responsibility to the ‘prudent use of antimicrobial agents in human medicine’, as these are able to destroy or prevent the growth of bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms. Given the importance and relevance of this matter, and in view of the fact that the issue of antimicrobial resistance is still largely unresolved, I welcome the tabling of this motion for a resolution, and I hope that it will contribute to improving the quality of life of the EU public."@en1
