Antimicrobial resistance poses a serious threat to public health worldwide, involving more complicated treatment protocols, higher risks of death and additional costs to health-care systems. This phenomenon clearly has cross-border implications, and the occurrence of exceptional situations which would most probably not be manageable with the current resources and knowledge cannot be ruled out.
I therefore call on Member States to strengthen the global commitment to protecting the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents for the benefit of future generations. I also note with concern that the level of access to information on antimicrobial resistance and the impact on the consumption behaviour of citizens remain uneven across the EU, in particular with regard to the enforcement of the legislation on prescription-only use for antibiotics. I consider it necessary for there to be more research on new antimicrobials and possible alternatives under the EU’s Research Framework Programmes."@en1
