I did not support the points that were emphasised in the resolution dealing with the events in Ukraine. The European Parliament does not have the authority to be an ‘attorney’ for Yulia Tymoshenko. That is precisely the tendency of the main argument of the resolution. The conviction of the former prime minister is an assessment of her activities, of an action that exceeded her authority and of her fraudulent positive portrayal of a controversial government decision that made it possible for Ukraine to conclude an economically unfavourable agreement with the Russian Federation. Thus it is not correct to refer to the judgment as a violation of human rights and to the trial as politically motivated. It is nevertheless true that every trial of a politician is to a certain extent political. We in this parliament have also participated in giving a political veneer to this trial."@en1
