I voted in favour of the Parliament resolution on the situation in Egypt and Syria, in particular of Christian communities, because the freedoms of religion, belief, conscience and thought are fundamental and universal values and are essential elements of democracy. The European Union has repeatedly expressed its commitment to the freedoms of religion, belief, conscience and thought, and has stressed that governments have a duty to guarantee these freedoms all over the world.
We welcome the efforts by the Egyptian authorities to identify those responsible for and the perpetrators of attacks against the Christian community. We ask the Egyptian authorities to ensure full respect for all fundamental rights, including freedom of association, freedom of peaceful assembly, freedom of expression and freedom of religion, conscience and belief for all citizens of Egypt, including Coptic Christians, and to ensure that the Coptic Christian community is not victim to violent attack and is able to live in peace and express its beliefs freely throughout the country. We call on the Egyptian authorities to end discrimination against Coptic Christians, for example by removing references to religion from all official documents, and to ensure that constitutional provisions are inclusive and do not leave loopholes for discrimination against anybody in Egyptian society."@en1
