"Almost nine months after the fall of Hosni Moubarak, and with President al-Assad of Syria clinging on to power at the price of a bloody repression, I voted in favour of this resolution, which condemns the murders of peaceful militants in Egypt and Syria and calls on the authorities of both countries to protect Christian communities. In Egypt, although the revolution had raised tremendous hope of freedom, the repression of the Coptic Christians is a reminder that the situation of the minorities in the Middle East remains extremely worrying. More worrying still is the situation in Syria, where President al-Assad, in a murderous surge forward, continues to persecute protesters and to eliminate those who oppose the regime. Here too, Christians are under threat, and it behoves the Syrian authorities to guarantee their safety. However, as we are dealing with a regime that has lost its footing and which retains power through weapons, repression and torture, it is an illusion to expect anything. President al-Assad must step down as quickly as possible in the interests of the Syrian people and the stability of the entire region."@en1
