"Madam President, the discussions on international agreements on the processing and transfer of passenger name record (PNR) data with Australia, Canada and the US always raise the question of compliance with the rights of EU citizens in the area of personal data protection. In the case of this agreement with Australia, it is also impossible to avoid certain doubts as to whether the handling of data on EU citizens by the Australian security services will conform to EU law. The fact that the agreement bypasses the well-known criteria of the European Parliament for granting consent to the signing of agreements with third countries on the transfer of PNR data, shows that the Commission has either failed to do its work in an entirely professional way, or is to some extent indifferent to the opinion of the European Parliament and thus to the directly elected legitimate representatives of the people of Europe, which is even more serious, in my view. I firmly believe that the European Parliament is determined to cooperate with all countries in the fight against terrorism, but this must not be at the cost of violating the fundamental rights of our citizens."@en1
