"Mr President, the studies carried out by STOA – the European Parliament’s Scientific and Technology Options Assessment – indicate that the level of coordination and cooperation in the area of research and innovation involving medicines is insufficient and that health matters are not dealt with adequately in European research programmes.
These studies present the following recommendations: to develop a portal enabling access to all documents and legislative provisions relating to the use of antibiotics which are applicable in Member States; to develop a database containing all national and European antimicrobial resistance initiatives, both in terms of policies and specific research projects; to encourage policies on the use of prescription-only antibiotics in all Member States; to channel research funds into reducing antimicrobial resistance and into discovering new medicines; to support rapid diagnostic methods, and to develop a voluntary European accreditation scheme to incorporate European and international hygiene and health standards.
I call on the Commission and Council to take these recommendations into account."@en1
