".
I voted for the report drafted by Mr Reul because I think that the GALILEO programme is one of the successes of European integration. As part of the efforts and initiatives included in the EU 2020 strategy, the development of the GPS system and its associated applications plays a key role in strengthening innovation at EU level. This agreement is the culmination of 12 years of discussions between Europe and the US, reaching a consensus on the civil and military use of systems of this kind.
In this instance, compliance with the principle of proportionality is vital. This means that the necessary data must be supplied to the general public, while also providing suitable protection for military installations. At the same time, the geographical coverage achieved by these systems is important, as is the compatibility of the various networks and reception methods. Once all these aspects have been harmonised, this will make the balance between information available to the general public and confidential information clearer."@en1
