"Society has evolved a great deal over recent decades. Nowadays, more and more parents are raising their children alone. The fact is, 85% of single parents are women. This explains the adoption of an own-initiative report on the situation of single mothers in Europe. Conscious of the difficulties faced by these women, we call for greater attention to be paid to them. One of the priorities today is to achieve a balance between one’s professional and private lives: governments and companies must act to ensure that working conditions are as favourable as possible to reconciling employment and family life. Amongst the proposals that we should take away from this report, I support the major role for the European Social Fund (ESF) in allocating study grants for single mothers or in supporting their return to study."@en1
