"I can only lend my support to Mr Iacolino’s proposal on export and import authorisations for firearms. In May 2010, following the implementation of the United Nations Protocol against the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, the European Union’s work on the subject intensified, culminating in the current proposal, which suggests that effective EU control on the arms trade is essential. The fact that the Protocol has so far been ratified by 83 countries, including many Member States of the EU, leads to the conclusion that supporting this kind of initiative is the right path to take. The arms trade is a very delicate sector that needs suitable regulation designed, above all else, to block illegal trafficking."@en1
