"This report looks at how the EU can play its part in ensuring robust insurance guarantee schemes as a way of reducing the risks facing policyholders in the event of the failure of an insurance company. This report looks to strengthen consumer protection in four main areas: ensuring consumers are protected in the event of bankruptcy; ensuring the equal treatment of consumers regardless of the country of the insurer; ensuring that there is sufficient cover for consumers in cases of fraud; and making sure that the taxpayer does not become liable for the bankruptcy of an insurer. This protection will apply to all types of insurance policy and provides protection from the gung-ho attitude of some financial institutions with the public’s money."@en1
