". Madam President, Palestinian political detainees started a hunger strike two weeks ago in protest against the inhumane conditions in which they are being held. Yesterday, they were joined by another 2 000 fighters. The protest comes in the wake of insulting statements by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, who, in his own words, considers the conditions in which they are being held to be extremely generous. The hunger strikers are demanding access to health, especially for ill and injured detainees. They have denounced their collective punishments, which include a ban on visits by their families, humiliating body searches and inhumane isolation which, in some cases, has lasted nearly 10 years, as in the case of the Secretary General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The people need to step up their fight against the imperialists and their fight for the unconditional recognition of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state, within the 1967 borders, and with its capital in East Jerusalem, which is a full member of the UN."@en1
