"Madam President, at last week’s conference on the implementation of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, I talked in my speech about how I see the EU as a union of fundamental rights. These fundamental rights undoubtedly include the right of Romanian and Bulgarian citizens to enter the Schengen area, but, in my opinion, social rights are among the most important.
We must not lose sight of social rights, particularly in this period of economic, financial and commercial crisis. Who pays the highest price for the consequences of the crisis? It is not the bank managers, speculators or financial market traders. It is mainly employees and members of the so-called middle level. The neoliberal market mechanism has got most of these people into a very difficult situation. It is therefore unacceptable, in my opinion, for us to give priority now to the recapitalisation of the banks, and not to talk about the need to improve the social situation in Europe."@en1
