"Madam President, the current developments in Ukraine are again giving us cause to debate whether we can communicate our views in a sufficiently intelligible way to our friends, and convince them that not all of the steps they take in their political battles can be considered compatible with our democratic norms.
However, the trial of the former Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, is, among other things, leading to doubts over long-term contracts to transport gas from Russia to the countries of the EU. Anyone who remembers late 2009, when many countries were without heat in the middle of winter, will justifiably feel that we should be engaging in a far more intensive dialogue with Ukraine and Russia at the moment, particularly in order to avoid becoming victims again of the long-term commercial disputes between Ukraine and Russia, our two eastern partners. As well as calling for decency and democracy in the policies of Mr Yanukovych, we should, in my opinion, add a call for decency and correctness in contractual relationships, in respect of both Russia and Ukraine."@en1
