"The events that unfolded this Sunday in Egypt are totally unacceptable, and I strongly condemn them. It is the duty of the Egyptian authorities to protect its citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation. The situation in Yemen also worries me. President Saleh’s refusal to comply with the agreement drawn up with Gulf Cooperation Council states is hardly likely to put an end to the daily violence seen in this country. The humanitarian situation is catastrophic, and it has been going on for far too long. Like you, Baroness Ashton, I welcome the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the young female activist, Tawakkul Karman, who played a leading role, earlier in the year, in instigating the student protests in Sanaa, always in a peaceful manner. It is a sign of support for the protesters fighting for greater freedom, justice and dignity. These countries undergoing revolution or in a period of transition will need more time to devise a democratic future. We have a responsibility to support these people in building the society that they choose."@en1
