"I am deeply concerned about the continuing violence in Yemen, Syria and Bahrain. The recent attacks against the Christian community in Egypt are an added cause for concern. They are indicative of the far-reaching turmoil still prevalent in this society. Resorting to violence is not the way to rebuild a state on democratic foundations. I regard the Egyptian army’s response to the peaceful demonstration of Coptic Christians as a dangerous show of force. Inter-religious tensions may destabilise Egypt and the whole region. To avoid them, it is the Egyptian authorities’ duty to cast some light on these incidents. Clarification is also required of the role played by national television, which deliberately broadcast erroneous information, resulting in a deterioration of the situation. I call on the High Representative to highlight these issues in the discussions with the Egyptian authorities."@en1
