"Mr President, the situations that have already been discussed here and that are happening in various countries of Africa and the Middle East are worrying. However, I would like to draw particular attention to the position of the European Union, which is always ambiguous and marked by double standards. While EU troops, bombs and other instruments of war continue to kill civilians in Libya, the Union remained silent on the matter of Bahrain when Saudi Arabia came in with its troops to crush the popular uprising against the regime. It continues to lack authoritative intervention even though we have seen people who took part in those demonstrations sentenced, even including health workers or doctors who simply treated the injured. We cannot allow this to continue, and we cannot accept that the EU should keep quiet because Saudi Arabia has oil or because Bahrain is home to the United States Fifth Fleet and the US is making it into a major strategic base. We therefore call on you to change your position, Baroness Ashton."@en1
