"Mr President, if there is a time when the European Parliament’s voice needs to be heard loud and clear, it is obviously in situations such as this, in other words, when human rights and freedoms are being violated around the world. We are now discussing North Africa and, more specifically, certain countries in North Africa. The Coptic minority group is found in Egypt, but we know that there are more minority groups, and it is important that we do not only talk about this on one occasion but that this voice is heard continuously and relentlessly. This is, incidentally, also what is required and expected of us by the Treaty of Lisbon. Human rights and freedoms are not something that we should impose on these countries, but rather something that should elevate them. I also cannot help but recall what happened when Saudi troops were called into Bahrain. It was actually embarrassing, not to mention shameful, to see the Saudi troops and the tanks come in and mow down people who had a hunger and thirst for freedom, in view of the fact that it was us in the West, if by the West we mean the US and Europe, that had equipped these troops with tanks and weapons. We did this because we put stability before democracy, and I believe that this has to be a lesson for us going forward: not to attach so much importance to stability that we accept the trampling underfoot of democracy or that democracy is not called attention to loudly and clearly enough. That is something that we have not done, but that must now be given consideration and be the order of the day in future, too. Oil was present in Saudi Arabia, and it is still there, but democracy must also take root in the country."@en1
