"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the massacre of the Christians in Egypt is merely the latest in a long series of atrocities perpetrated above all at an institutional level, where Christians are marked from birth, religion being mentioned on all official documents, and at a time when the constitution states that in Egypt, the official State religion is Islam, and Sharia, the law of the Koran, is the main source of legislation. Today, 10% of the population in Egypt are Christians. In the seventh century, the figure was 99%. Since 1945, 10 million Christians have abandoned the southern and eastern shore of the Mediterranean. In the last six months, 93 000 Christians have abandoned Egypt. This is ethnic cleansing. I am asking Baroness Ashton to move beyond complaints and resolutions that do not have consequences or lead to practical actions. If we bombed the population in Libya, I think that at the very least we should be considering adopting sanctions in Egypt, in order to ensure respect for people’s fundamental rights and the absolute, universal values that are the sanctity of life, equal dignity among human beings, and religious freedom."@en1
