"Mr President, it is a great paradox that since the onset of the Arab Spring, the situation of Christians in Egypt has worsened with almost every passing month. Christian congregations have been attacked, and over 100 Christian women have been kidnapped – they are often raped and forced to adopt Islam. The European Union must act quickly and unequivocally on this. Our economic and political support should be clearly directed only at democratic forces. We must oppose the references to sharia law in the Egyptian Constitution. Elections in Egypt should be held after changes have been made to the constitution and should last for one day across the whole country in order to avoid falsification and intimidation. Our silence on these matters will mean tacit consent to anti-Christian religious cleansing and to Egypt being engulfed by radicalism and destabilisation."@en1
