"This is yet another debate in which the most important thing was never mentioned: changing the policies and basis of the economic and monetary union to prioritise jobs with rights, and the elimination of poverty and social exclusion, inequality and social injustice. An employment and social progress pact presupposes the complete abolition of the current Stability and Growth Pact in order to stop the exacerbation of the situation in Greece, Portugal, Ireland and other countries where problems are intensifying. What is needed is an end to the veritable pacts of aggression against, and extortion of, the peoples that are victims of intervention by the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the Commission. We have already seen the result of this in Greece. It would be good to take a different route before Portugal and Ireland end up in the same situation. It is time to bring to an end the impositions of the directorate, which continues to force disastrous policies on the peoples of states with weak economies and profound social injustices, in the interests of European big business. The proposal that they are drafting on the recapitalisation of the banks is an example of this, as it will be another huge transfer of bank debt to the public sector; in other words, onto the backs of the workers and peoples of Europe."@en1
