lpv:translated text	"Mr President, I would congratulate Mr Dowgielewicz and Commissioner Rehn simply so I can say that I believe, following on from and developing the results of the debate on the State of the Union, that a huge step has been taken today towards solving the problems of the crisis in the euro area. This is because the Commission has made a commitment here to use its power of initiative, and to do so in conjunction with the Council, in order to resolve this crisis. I believe that this is a hugely important step, and that it is the only means we currently have of resolving the crisis in the euro area. There is no chance of resolving it in the short term merely with an intergovernmental approach, and so it is necessary for the Member States and their governments to give the Commission the instruments and the mandate for it to lead this resolution process, and to put into practice, implement and develop the road map that it has presented here. However, I am bound to say that this is not incompatible with our creating, with our developing an ability to amend the Treaties, at the same time. I, too, am convinced that the Treaties need to be changed in the medium term, but we will also have to do this in the sense of strengthening them and giving greater power and stature to the Commission. By stepping up the Community method now, in the short term, and by subsequently changing the Treaties, in the long term, we will achieve more integration and a solution for the 17 countries of the euro area and the 27 countries of the European Union."@en1
