"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I agree with the main thrust of the Polish Presidency’s statement, which is that Europe has a future if we can succeed in restoring confidence. To do that – as many have said – we need stability and growth. This is a matter for the political will of our leaders. However, if these much desired reforms are not brought in within the next few months, paradoxically, they will become the pretext for eurosceptic criticisms, in which the very same words we use constructively and positively will be used against our project for a united Europe. Unless we act quickly, words such as ‘nation’, ‘people’, ‘identity’ and ‘occupation’ will be thrown back in our faces to attack the feasibility of a united Europe. Allow me, therefore, Commissioner, to return to the issue previously raised by Mr Ferber of the timescales and methods which the Commission intends to use to present its proposals to Parliament. We give our complete and utter support to the announcements you made earlier during the speech by President Barroso and also in this one. However, when, how and where are you going to detail the nature of your proposals to Parliament? Because if you missed this bus, it would place us in a position where you would lose our support as well."@en1
