"Mr President, I would like to apologise. I have been informed by the Council that I have done Mr Van Rompuy an injustice. I would like to rectify that. I just criticised Mr Van Rompuy for not coming next week because he was going to the EU-China Summit. However, the fact is that the European Council meeting was due to take place last Sunday and has been postponed to 23 October. That means that it is not Mr Van Rompuy’s fault. He cannot, logically speaking, refuse an invitation to attend the EU-China Summit to visit Parliament instead if the actual date that he should have informed Parliament about has been postponed by 14 days. As I am always criticising Mr Van Rompuy – and I will continue to criticise him, not personally, but because I consider the office of President of the Council to be inappropriate, as it should be combined with that of the President of the Commission – because I always do this, but wish to be fair when I criticise him, and he did not deserve it, I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight publicly."@en1
