"I would like to make two further statements. Firstly, information from the South. The unfolding of events in the countries of our Southern Neighbourhood is a source of both hopes and fears. We are going to talk about this today. We welcome the gradual stabilisation of the situation in Libya. Fears are being aroused, however, by the humanitarian situation facing refugees and displaced persons. Tunisia today is moving steadily towards its first truly free elections. I am planning to visit both of these countries – Libya and Tunisia – in the next few weeks, where I will present the European Parliament’s position on democratic progress, the creation of a free market and future neighbourly cooperation between the European Union and Libya and Tunisia.
The violence in Egypt must be stopped, and the military authorities, instead of escalating tension, have a duty to help exercise restraint and to guarantee the security of members of religious minorities there. We would like to appeal very strongly for this to be done.
In Syria and Yemen, the regimes continue to respond with violence to the citizens’ demands. We must constantly appeal to the European Union’s Member States and the international community to oppose the brutal repression and to support the opposition movement for democratic change in both these countries.
Secondly, news from the East. It was with great regret that we received news of the sentence of seven years in prison handed down to Yulia Tymoshenko, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine. We are afraid that this sentence is politically motivated and shows that the law is being applied selectively in Ukraine. Our concern has also been aroused over the independence and transparency of the trial. Strengthening the rule of law and the real independence of the judiciary are conditions which are essential for the eventual signing of the association agreement at the end of this year. I call on the Ukrainian authorities to ensure that the principles and values which define our mutual relations are given practical expression in the spirit of a true Eastern Partnership."@en1
