"I voted in favour of this resolution. Despite the progress made in the area of sustainable development since the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Summit and the 2002 Johannesburg Summit, there remain many unresolved global development issues, and many of the international community’s undertakings have still not been fully met. Approximately 1.4 billion people still live in extreme poverty, and challenges such as climate change and world population growth pose a major threat to poverty reduction, human rights, peace, security and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in many developing countries. The UN General Assembly has decided to convene a United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development at the highest possible level in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012 at which world leaders will have the opportunity to determine the sustainability agenda for the next ten years, reaffirming the need for universal solidarity. I support the call made for countries to be represented at the level of Heads of State and (or) Government, and the summit should establish specific and concrete goals and the means by which they will be assessed and monitored."@en1
