"This joint motion for a resolution, which has arisen in the wake of a declaration by the Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, pursuant to Rule 110(2) of the Rules of Procedure, concerns the political situation in Palestine.
During the last few months, a whole range of motions and draft resolutions have been approved in various international organisations regarding the political situation in the Middle East, with particular reference to the right of Palestine to be recognised as a sovereign state. The EU, as a Community which is a friend to both parties (Israel and Palestine) and much respected in the region, is in an ideal position to assist in this process and encourage the parties to return to the negotiating table with a view to reaching a border agreement that will allow people to continue to live where they have always lived. In view of the EU’s repeated expression of support for a two-state solution, with an independent, democratic and viable State of Palestine beside the State of Israel, I am voting in favour of this resolution, hoping that peace may soon come to the Middle East and that we may see a democratic Palestine based on values."@en1
