"Mr President, the Rio+20 Conference offers us an important opportunity to discuss global challenges such as the effective use of resources, sustainability and food security. I wish to highlight two important issues in light of tomorrow’s resolution. The first one concerns agriculture. In Romania 30% of the population work in the agricultural sector. Farming is the only source of income for millions of people, and the only major support for subsistence. Most of them own small holdings. This is just the same as in other Member States and in other countries outside the European Union. Small farms which have a low impact on the environment and offer food security to millions of people need to be supported and promoted. The second issue I wish to highlight is to do with the marine environment. This is a source we use jointly. This is why it needs to be managed efficiently at a global level."@en1
