"The funds allocated to the food aid programme in 2012 will be reduced to less than a quarter of this year’s budget. There is the risk that in 2013 the programme will stop due to opposition from six EU Member States to the possibility of continuing to support the most deprived citizens from the common agricultural policy budget, as has happened until now.
Apart from the technical discussion about transferring food aid from the EU agriculture budget to Member States’ social budgets, there is actually a lack of political will from the six governments from Central and Western Europe to contribute to a solidarity programme for Europe’s poorest citizens, at a time when their number is steadily rising due to the economic crisis.
I would like to say how much I appreciate the readiness shown by Commissioner Dacian Cioloș to come up with a solution for continuing the food aid programme, a system introduced back in 1987 by the then President of the European Commission, Jacques Delors.
I call on the six governments to show solidarity and wisdom in the current extremely tough climate. There is still time to realise that the EU is growing weaker as a structure due to displays of national egotism and the disappearance of the fundamental bond of solidarity."@en1
