"This motion for a Parliament resolution on human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity at the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council was tabled by Members from all of the political groups, following a statement by the Vice-President of the Commission/High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Lady Ashton, pursuant to Rule 110(2) of the Rules of Procedure. The defence of human rights has been one of the main flagship policies of the EU throughout its history. Despite having signed up to the Charter of Fundamental Rights, there are Member States in which these principles are violated on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. At a time when the UN and other international institutions are enshrining sexual orientation and gender identity as a specific human right, I welcome the adoption of this motion for a resolution, which, by upholding human values and the principle of freedom will certainly contribute to reducing penalisation of and discrimination against homosexuals."@en1
