"I voted in favour of this motion for a resolution because the European Union and its Member States should guarantee respect for human rights in their own policies, and the European Union’s position in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR) should be stronger and more sustainable. Although we are living in a period of democracy and are making every effort to defend fundamental human rights and freedoms, the many human rights abuses and widespread gender-based discrimination both within the European Union and in third countries continue to cause concern. Thus, this resolution adopted by the UNHCR is important for ensuring compliance with and implementation of international human rights standards in order to prevent people from being discriminated against. Furthermore, we should focus on the fact that respect for and the promotion and safeguarding of the universality of human rights is part of the European Union’s ethical and legal . It is important for the Member States to cooperate more closely with third countries by participating in Universal Periodic Review and the procedures of Treaty-monitoring bodies to ensure the consistency of the European Union’s external and internal actions in the field of human rights, as provided for by the Treaty on European Union. Furthermore, the Member States and the Commission should together fully address these issues of inequality."@en1
