The current economic, financial and social crisis has demonstrated that the European Union’s current economic governance model has not worked: the surveillance framework has shown itself to be very weak and the rules of the Stability and Growth Pact have not been respected.
I therefore agree with the package of measures that the Commission has submitted on economic governance, which should have a key role in the prevention of future crises and in strengthening European competitiveness and economic growth. I am voting for the report by Ms Ford on requirements for budgetary frameworks of the Member States. I welcome the fact that the regulation is applicable to all the EU Member States, establishing a legal framework that is necessary for the effective and timely monitoring of compliance with the rules, based on reliable and independent analysis.
It should thus contribute to greater transparency in the decision-making process, as well as greater accountability among policy makers. I am in favour of the opportunity for governments to update their budgetary framework in the medium term to reflect new political priorities, although this should clearly highlight the differences with the previous budgetary framework."@en1
