"The President of the European Commission said today that the European Union is at a crucial turning point. The road to economic recovery remains long and difficult, and the effects of the crisis have been repeatedly and severely felt by the European public. I agree with the statements about the need for all pro-Europeans to join forces to defend the European project and act to meet challenges through closer European integration. Here, the role of Parliament and its work alongside the Commission are particularly important. It is crucial to strengthen the EU, specifically through its institutions supporting the Commission to defend Europe’s common interests and support European integration. I would congratulate Dr Barroso on his determination and courage, and I am counting on his College of Commissioners to table concrete proposals that will have a genuine impact by 2020. The Multiannual Financial Framework will play a crucial role, focusing on the areas where the EU can make a difference. It is essential that we join forces and be able to build a stable, responsible Union; an EU of growth and solidarity, with an active and effective voice on the world stage."@en1
