"Today is an important day – the day on which the European Parliament, in voting on the ‘six pack’, will make a stronger statement on the subject of the crisis than at any previous time. The outcome of today’s vote will show what kind of vision we have for the EU and the euro area as well as which direction we are going to take. I firmly believe that the road we choose will be one of stable finances, low deficits and falling debt.
We must remember, however, that just tightening our belts will not be enough. The next decisions we are going to have to make will be decisions about ways in which we can achieve a growth in competitiveness for our European economy. In my opinion, we should begin implementation of the measures contained in the Euro Plus Pact as quickly as possible, which means carrying out responsible pension reforms, undertaking reforms relating to wage indexation, reducing the burden of work associated with VAT collection and building a truly single market. Other questions to be resolved are matters concerning the method of funding research, education, innovation and infrastructure."@en1
