"Mr President, Mr Barroso, I applaud the belief that you have expressed in the future of Europe. If nothing else, I would like to congratulate you for trying. I am aware of the problems that you face. You are not alone, but you are trying. I shall say no more.
However, I fear that we started monetary union off on the wrong foot. How can we have a single currency with seventeen different governments, seventeen different decision-making centres and seventeen different centres buying bonds, all with different policies? Thus, in my opinion, we urgently need to speed up action on the economic union of Europe. Without economic union in Europe, I fear that our efforts will be in vain. There is something else I wish to say to you: as a lawyer, I know that public limited companies capitalise their capital gains. We have registered capital gains against the dollar. Please capitalise them."@en1
