"Mr President, Mr Barroso, I would like to talk to you more specifically about the public service sector, to tell you that it is vital for the European Union’s economy. May I remind you that it represents 26% of GDP and a third of all jobs in the European Union. What is the Commission doing in this regard? On Michel Barnier’s initiative, it published last April the Single Market Act – you mentioned it – which is aimed at boosting growth within the internal market. I welcome this initiative. For his part, Commissioner Almunia published only a few days ago a reform on state aid rules that apply to economic services of general interest. His ambition to simplify and clarify is supported by our Parliament. Beyond these two initiatives, Mr Barroso, I believe the Commission should be much more ambitious still. At the start of this parliamentary term, you committed yourself to proposing a communication on this matter to Parliament before the end of 2011. However, there is no sign of that yet. Mr Barroso, should we not promote this sector now more than ever? This is important in the period we are going through."@en1
