"Mr President, Dr Barroso, I told you a year ago that you had not woken up to the crisis. Now the crisis is here, it has made itself felt very clearly and it has woken everyone up. My fear is that it will be too little too late.
Europe needs three things. Firstly, it needs its single currency to issue debt in its name, like any currency in the real world: it cannot continue with 17 different debts.
Secondly, it needs this debt to be used on a plan for economic recovery, for jobs, for public investment, and for the construction of infrastructure. We agree on that.
It needs a third thing. It needs the political legitimacy to use this debt and to make this economic recovery plan. That is a thing that the President of the Commission can guarantee, by taking steps to ensure that the next President of the Commission is the man or woman chosen by the 500 million citizens in the 2014 elections.
The purpose of this would be that, in the end, when there are good ideas on the table, they cannot be killed off by the leaders of Paris or Berlin at a summit next door to a casino, and that the voice of the 500 million would make itself heard so that we could have a European Union with genuine solidarity; not the type of solidarity that we have now, which, I must confess, scares me a little more each time I hear it mentioned."@en1
