"Mr President, Mr Barroso has said today that the European Commission is the economic government of the Union, and we can infer that it is going to seek formalisation of this state of affairs. Using the crisis as justification, the Union wants not only to recover, but also to move forward, strengthening integration and creating the foundations of a European superstate. However, all the talk about the economic crisis is ignoring the crisis of democracy and the crisis of values. Further possibilities have been announced today concerning amendment of the Treaty of Lisbon, which was adopted against the will of the citizens expressed in referendums held in several EU Member States. Indeed, the process of constructing a European state is being carried on without any reference to the most important values upon which Europe is built, by which I mean Christian values. What is more, we are witnessing an attempt to disown them. It needs to be stated clearly and emphatically that no reform will be successful without a return to the true roots of Europe."@en1
