"The Warsaw Summit provides an important occasion for examining the progress that has been made among the European Union’s eastern neighbours, using this as a basis for devising specific policies for a common future. The European Union must support the transition to democracy in the countries of the Eastern partnership. This is why I think that a key step in doing this is to present a clear prospect of the partner countries joining the EU, as well as to implement the structural reforms required to bring them into line with European policies and regulations. I would like to stress the need for the EU to assume specific commitments regarding the signing of association and free trade agreements, as well as the importance of visa liberalisation for Eastern European partners.
We should not overlook either the role played by local and regional authorities in harmonising relations within the Eastern partnership. Their contribution is vital and must be focused, in particular, on territorial development, supporting mutual contacts and improving economic relations. Furthermore, Eastern partnership countries need to take important steps towards increasing respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law. The EU’s objective in its eastern neighbourhood must be to focus on creating a democratic, stable region to ensure respect for freedom, dignity and fundamental rights."@en1
