"Mr President, the Eastern partnership has been our response to the interruption of gas supply from Russia and to the conflict in Georgia. We wanted to reassure the Eastern countries that they were not forgotten and their hope to get closer to the EU is a tangible expectation. The fact that all these countries belong to the former Soviet space has inevitably brought Russia into the equation, complicating it from the very beginning. Moreover, since then, the current problems in the EU created by the crisis, and the unexpected developments in North Africa, have complicated matters even further, while not deterring Russia from taking advantage of these difficulties. I would only hope that when the negotiations on the association agreements are completed, there will not be any last-minute political change of heart, on our part, in honouring them."@en1
