"The European Schools have developed over the last 50-odd years in order to ensure that children whose parents, mainly European civil servants, are unable to work in their country of origin are taught fundamental subjects in their mother tongue. This is not a luxury, but a requirement. Today, these Schools provide quality education and disseminate European culture and values, the merits of which are plain to see. The report, which was adopted almost unanimously, calls for the promotion of this model in national education systems, whilst guaranteeing respect for the competences of Member States. These Schools contribute to the development of a European identity that is based on the strong educational principles of multilingualism and mobility. I support the idea of these successful models, which can certainly still be improved upon, being able to inspire national education systems. That is why I welcome the adoption of this report, which will allow us to further reflect on the performance and relevance of existing education systems."@en1
