"As regards the Western Balkans, the Commission has a very useful instrument. The overall enlargement policy is giving us an opportunity, through a number of the chapters, not only Chapter 30 which relates to trade, but also other chapters, rules of law and so on, which also benefit the more appropriate business and investment climate in those countries, to work quite efficiently. I think the results prove that too. As regards the Western Balkans and the European Union, you can see that trade exchange between those countries and the European Union has actually increased every year by 10%. We are not only keen to develop bilateral relations between the EU and those countries – although our first priority is to bring those countries closer and closer to the European Union and make sure that there are no flaws in the approximation to the EU’s rules – but we also support the regional aspect of trade. The Commission supports CEFTA financially and through various projects, which include the Western Balkans and also Moldova. Very recently, it supported Cathy Ashton’s efforts to find a solution to the remaining issues between Serbia and Kosovo over custom stamps."@en1
