"Madam President, it seems to me that many EU politicians have already found a cure to the problems currently afflicting the Member States. This miracle cure comprises a ‘United States of Europe’. All that is required, apparently, is to relieve Member States of their budgetary sovereignty, unify tax rates and create a completely new tax. Billions will be poured into a stabilisation mechanism from the coffers of eurozone Member States. A brand new official will be placed in charge – the European Minister of Finance. It will not be a United States but a United Purses of Europe. Every one of the previously mentioned decisions is bad. We have already been through this in Europe and we know how it ended. Assets without an owner, people without motivation and the economy, which we want to save, sinking to the bottom. If we really care about building up a European identity, about genuine solidarity between nations, and about peace and prosperity, we need to discuss a far broader range of topics than mere financial issues. We need to define the values on which the whole enterprise will be based. At the moment it is built on sand."@en1
