"Madam President, the new Law on Education adopted this year in Romania defines the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Târgu Mureş as – amongst others – a multicultural higher education institution, where half of the student body is already made up of Hungarian nationals. While the law which was passed stipulates the establishment of a separate Hungarian faculty, the university’s ethnic-majority management is unwilling to comply. In an institution officially recognised as multicultural, and where half the students are Hungarian, the management are doing everything in their power to prevent them from studying medicine in their own language. This is, essentially, the typical multicultural and minority-friendly policy that aptly reflects the attitudes taken towards the issue in certain Member States. The review of compliance with the Copenhagen criteria has brought into focus the treatment of minorities by states wishing to accede to the EU. However, it is also necessary to guarantee accountability for compliance with the Copenhagen criteria even after accession. Interethnic relations are tense in Europe, particularly in the Eastern regions; ignoring this would be a huge mistake, which could have considerable adverse implications in the future."@en1
