"Mr President, in the Belgian city of Antwerp, a Sharia court is currently being established. The initiative is coming from the radical organisation Islam for Belgium. The aim is to create a parallel legal system. The court is intended, in particular, to provide mediation in family law disputes. In doing so, self-appointed judges will apply Sharia law instead of Belgian family law.
For women that means suppression, as women and men do not have the same rights under Sharia law. Criminal law is also to be handled. Legal experts fear that this will prevent the Belgian authorities from prosecuting so-called cultural crimes such as honour killings and forced marriages.
Sharia courts reinforce parallel societies that have nothing in common with our understanding of human rights. If we allow Muslims to found their own Sharia courts, it will be the end of a Europe of freedom and the rule of law."@en1
